As you'll see from their site, they're offering specific one-way fares now at $49-$109. (A vagrant can't even get a Greyhound ticket for that price.) The catch, and this is where their marketing department has done a great job of convincing the general public that they're the cheapest, is by offering a minimal amount of these fares, possibly only one $49 one-way fare from each base.

As you both have stated too, they're not always the cheapest, but "public perception" is over half the battle.

The other thing that SWA has masterfully done is stayed off of the other travel sites (orbitz, etc) and the only way someone can buy a ticket on SWA is to go to their very own website or a ticket agent and once the passenger gets to SWA, they will most likely just book it because they "perceive" that SWA is the cheapest. Well done by the marketing folks.
