It will be interesting to watch. If the 737 type was indeed a method to reduce costs, new hire pilots should expect to have to get a DC-9 type, since there is a high likelyhood of newbies going to the 717.
If not, it means 1) the 717s won't be around long enough to matter or, 2) the 737 type is just a sorting mechanism for hiring.
