It is supposed to be automatic. At 1200 prior to a hard non-fly day, you are released from all reserve obligations. If they call at 1201, you're under no obligation to answer the phone or report for an assignment.
If they show you on short call that last day from 5am to 5pm, you could give them a courtesy call to alert them of the mistake so it doesn't bite them later, and so they can cover the shift (if possible.) But its not really required that you do so.
