CAL guys please feel free to refine this info.
New hires were holding 777 FO in EWR rarely, but some were. The majority of the time it was a mix of EWR 756 and EWR 737. The premium widebody/international aircraft anomaly happened mainly because DH (i.e the IRO position) was being paid at 50% pay, then 75% pay, and now back to full pay. Some of those slots went junior for that reason. Now this situation is not as much of the case anymore.

And, to correct your CA info from back in 2007, there were certainly faster upgrades than that. We had quite a few less than 3 year captains and even a couple in the 2 year area, including one being the son of a certain flight operations manager person at CAL.

Again, a lot of this very junior captain scenario is the result of our PBS system. Many senior FOs are not willing to leave their senior right seat schedules on the 777 or 767 for a few $$$ more an hour but a huge hit on their quality of life on the 737.

As far as bases a Seniority.....

Looking at the last bid that involved the 'recalls' of the CAL furloughs (being the most junior obviously), and judging by where they were awarded as being the "junior" awards, they were placed in (system bid within the last month):
B737-IAH
B756-EWR
B737-EWR
B737-GUM
The majority of the numbers went to IAH/EWR on the B737. Then the next bulk went to B756 EWR, followed by approx 15 to B737 GUM. The MOST Senior base at CAL as things presently stand (both seats accounted for) would be the B777 IAH.

If you wanted to fly Int'l, by far your best bet is B756 EWR. You'll get some Int'l on the B737(to Central/South Americas/Caribbean/Canada/ect...).

Again, that's as things PRESENTLY stand. Keep that in mind, post merger, who knows.....Hope that info helps.
Would also add that looking at the bid result, it appears B737-CLE also was held by 6 recalls. So 737 FOs throughout the system for the recalled pilots.
