Who said anything about not taking responsibility?
Do you think a new FO (say a probationary FO) is going to go against the company and the PIC over an issue where he/she feels the captain is fatigued and unable to recognize it? I'd say the vast majority will not. Why not include in the language that all flight deck crew members agree to extend the day or not? I have had the experience of flying with old guys 60+, 10 hour flight days, 14+ duty, and I can tell you that was the most dangerous flying in my career bar none. That is the reason I am so opposed to this 10 flt hr., 15 hr. day. I speak from experience.
BTW, I've been Captain in my past for many years and the attitude you have toward the FO is the kind that will get you into trouble. If you indeed take that attitude and you are not just blowing smoke, you are one step closer to a smoking hole. The guy next to you will see just how far you can screw things up before he/she speaks up. And we all make mistakes!
And as far as a motivation to continue the trip. We can all come up with reasons besides money to make the wrong decision and continue the trip. We are all so professional and would never make a mistake, I know. The thing about fatigue is you usually don't know that it was a real stupid decision until the next day or if it turns into a real blunder. It is insidious and sometimes hard to recognize. The decision shouldn't have to be made, which is why I am strongly against having the ability to extend the day in the first place, especially with all the other factors changing as well. But if it happens, the FO should have an equal voice, so I can keep my Buddies8 out of trouble, even though he thinks he doesn't need my help.
