I think the metal one is worth it. I have heard and seen the plastic ones bend and break. The metal one is a little heavier but much tougher. Just think of it as less time you need to spend in the gym

I do keep a laptop in the pocket. Its well padded and I have never had an issue with it. Laptop has been riding in there for almost a year now with out any issues. I will say this, I have the wide-screen Dell Inspiron (great for watching movies) and it is a snug fit in the pouch. I do however take it out of the pouch when I check the bag but thats mainly because I don't trust the sticky fingered TSA or rampers. Still beats the hell out of having to carry an extra laptop bag.
