I have been through the process, and did not have any problems getting a job with only a work permit and a pending green card status.
Best of luck.
I've been through the process too and get naturalized in 2 weeks!

To add on to what ^^ said...
The work permit, aka USCIS, I-765, Application for Employment Authorization needs to be submitted every year. If you work for an airline that requires you to travel out of the US, you will also need a yearly USCIS, I-131, Application for Travel Document. Both these forms have filing fees, biometrics and take about 2-3 months to process. To make sure that you aren't stuck without a work permit, you'll have to file approx. 4 months before your authorizations expire. You can apply for these the same time you apply for your Greencard, which is the I-485 and I-130.

As mentioned above, you can work using the I-765 until you get your green card, which should take no more than 12-15 months since staffing at USCIS has now increased.
