You're pulled from trip 24 hours prior and not assigned to anything 12 hours prior. Why would you go in? If the LCA gets sick 8 hours prior, wouldn't they have to find a new Capt AND call a reserve FO?

I think he is presenting a hypothetical situation in which one was never notified of a schedule change, or never notified that their trip is being used for IOE.
