I can't speak to your current rejection letter. I am honestly not sure what happened. That sounds a little odd. It could honestly be either of those, or it could have been random timing. I'm sure you are one of a thousand applying for that same job. However, as someone who has been in many interviews and hired many pilots in my life, I would say one thing red flagged me on your post.

While the fact that you are working on your degree puts you ahead of everyone who doesn't have a 4 year degree, it would put you behind everyone with a 4 year degree. And as I said above, there are probably a lot of people applying for the job.
