Name one other business that the company has said to the bread winners, sorry but we are going to have to take half of the money we pay you and for good measure we will not be paying the retirement package you signed up for.

I suggest reading "The World is Flat" sometime, and never, ever count on a retirement package surviving as long as you. That's why I like 401k's - they pay up front.
