I just went through this at the beginning of the month. There were multiple trips in open time, & recovery flying guys get assigned open time BEFORE reserves so I preferenced the trips I wanted so I didn't get stuck with a crummy trip. If there are trips in open time I'd use the PCS option to pref unless you don't care. I commute, so I wanted to pick a commutable trip.
If they notify you before 12 hours but don't assign you a trip you have to be 'promptly available' from original report until 6 hours after.
Clear as mud?
Hope this helps.
I am not a contract expert on reserve but I don't believe the last sentence is correct. They have to assign you a trip prior to the 12 hours. They can not notify you that you are on reserve and make you go to base for 6 hours. The only way you end up on the 6 hour leash is if they attempt to assign you a trip and you do not acknowledge the trip by 3 hours prior. You are then obligated to sit short call for 6 hours starting at your original report.
