While all you say is correct, look at the bright side of the situation. The sooner the NMB is involved, the sooner the process will run it's course. Either it will find an acceptable middle ground (doubtful) or run the course to a 30 day cooling off (probable) period.
Going into mediation is a smart move. Of course, ALPA is just now passing their counter to the company as the compensation issue has finally been hammered out.
Yes, it will take some time to spin up whoever is assigned, but not that long. However, the real question is how long will it take before they rule that the parties cannot come together and release them.
I really think this is the course of action that all knew (rather than hoped) would ensue. Just like all know the SLI will go to binding arbitration once the JCBA is complete.
