I think "past practice" is used in many contract disputes to establish what's "legal", written language notwithstanding. If nobody ever volunteered for overtime, the company would have no legitimate beef about it, they'd have to hire more pilots, and guys would move up faster. But lots of us
did volunteer (unless pilots were on furlough), so in a way, we made our own bed in this matter.
