I agree. Deregulation was good for most folks, but it was allowed to go to a little to far. The top 5-10% of the legacy seniority lists probably would have been better off without deregulation.

Some things need a certain level of regulation for safety, stability, or both.

Banks are regulated for stability. Nuclear power is regulated for safety.

Electrical utilities need to be regulated for stability, as California found out in 2000.

Airlines need to be regulated for both safety and stability, because you can't get safety without economic stability for the companies and employees.
