Thankfully I passed that damn test today with an 84. As I was turning my paperwork in I had a conversation with the UFPM who told me that two weeks ago, at my base, a female Maj or Lt Col was separated over the pt failures with 19 years of service. Congrats on passing the test -- that will simplify your life a bit, in a good way.
As far as the O-4/5 situation, in my experience those situations are almost never as simple as that -- there is very likely more to that story. You can rest assured that if I was that o-4/5's commander and she were even a decent performer, I would have gone to bat to keep her around -- and I am convinced most others would have too.
