I was on the Enterprise when these were made. It was 6 months of straight combat operations, with 12 cumulative days of port in Dubai. The boat had very poor a/c, most spaces were over 90 degrees for more than 4 months. There was no cold water, no ice, and sailors working in 130 degree heat in the Persian Gulf with no reprieve down below. It was a straight out miserable cruise, that resulted in phenominal combat efficiency and zero loss of life.
Capt Honors was doing his best to make light of a bad situation and keep moral high on what was a VERY demanding and high tempo operation. The fact that morale stayed as high as it did, and the ship and airwing didn't kill each other are a testement to the leadership on that boat.
I'd follow Capt Honors back in to combat any day of the week, and crap like this is why good people are leaving the military in droves.
