The airline pilot was definitely a complete hero in those days and people thought pilots were emblems of all good things. That has changed a lot, but I still occasionally meet people who hold attitudes of pilots as special. If you look closely you can see traces of the old attitudes in Hollywood movies and of course the media loves a "Sully" when they get one.
