I do the same. It doesn't cost anything to turn it on for roaming, just be sure to disable the data and push notifications. (I think that's it) If I get a call I usually reply via Skype, and I can read texts, but it's expensive to reply. So again, I wait until I've got wifi.
But it's good to have the roaming if you really need it. Just be aware of the cost per minute if you answer or place a call.
