The Predator loss rate is due to it's first generation data link. It is too slow or not reliable enough for critical phases of flight. They have to have a local control unit for t/o and landing. The newer RPVs like Global Hawk and the new Boeing UCAV have much more capability.

The tech is there now, just not reliable and fast enough for operational use, yet. It will come, it's only a matter of time.
