My guess is that uncle hulas is flush with some cash, and is a betting man...
- The MRJ is one of several new airplanes which will use the P&W geared turbofan. This will provide a significant reduction in fuel burn.
- If (when) oil prices go up, airlines may start parking 50's and replacing them less frequent, but more efficient airplanes.
Just having a pole position on the assembly line might make him some money, he doesn't have to operate them for anyone, he could just sell them at a markup, or lease them, etc.
I think he's betting on oil with this move.
Not sure why he picked the MRJ as opposed to the C-series, at least bombardier is proven to be capable of building airliners. Maybe seating capacity, if he wants to operate them himself the MRJ is closer to US scope limits.
