If one is truly "poverty stricken", he probably should not be traveling.... unless it is to move for a job in which case, he probably will want to take his car with him.
Have you ever flown tragically sick kids out of their small isolated towns to medical care in the "big city" that they can't reach by car for a price they can afford?
Yes, I have. I did it for six years. They were all critically ill and required more care than they could have received on 1900, so they wouldn't fly on an EAS aircraft. If you are talking about "walking wounded" (for lack of a better term) who are going for treatment, it would be cheaper to hire an ambulance to drive them to the next big city when they need it rather than running a 1900 twice a day, every day.
You probably haven't flown local entrepreneurs who rely on EAS to meet potential investors, business partners, and clients further afield, either.
I can almost buy this one.... except a guy only starts a business once so he doesn't need daily service forever. Business partners, if they are separated, are either working satellite offices or have chosen to live apart in BFE. If you insist on subsidizing these entrepreneurs' travel, then at least park the 1900, buy a 172 and put a 500 Commercial ASEL pilot on call: it'll be a heck of a lot cheaper, and a low time guy will get a job.
This irks me to no end. When are we as Americans going to stop thinking about how to screw the other American and realize we are only shooting each other in the back? We sit isolated on our big continent... guess what- it's a big, populated world. Americans helping Americans will make this country stronger. Where is our loyalty to each other, as Americans?
My loyalty is to my fellow Americans and their children is to push for a more fiscally responsible government. There is only so much money to spend, once it is gone, our leaders should stop spending.
And learn some math. If you think this is an "insane" waste of money you have little perspective.
True, EAS money is just a drop in the barrel. But enough drops makes a flood. And, if it were up to you, is EAS really the best place to spend that money? My guess is you would have a more important place to spend it.... I know I would.
