They need pilots in all aircraft and I heard a rumor (and I repeat that it's just a rumor) that a class or two of new hires will go straight to the 777 because the vacancies (about 30) were not filled in the last bid. Probably because no one wants to be a career reserve relief officer that never flys and go to the simulator every few months to stay current. Or maybe it the 7 destinations the 777 flys to like Tel Aviv and New Dehli. I prefer not to do 15 hours flights myself; 8 is enough.
