Indeed-an interesting read is of the Chernobyl disaster. Many firefighters and engineers died of radiation poisoning within weeks after the explosion. The neighboring town was evacuated the next day April 2, 1986 and has been fenced off since. Pretty scary stuff.

The big difference is that the russians didn't have the containment mechanisms in place like these reactors do.
As far as our futures being out of our hands in this career... let's see: oil fluctuations, global economic fluctuations, bird flu, pig flu, chipmunk flu, spotted squirrel pnuemonia, SARS, 9/11, and you name it, that's what we've signed up for in this industry.
