One area of concern is how many posts I see from folks saying "If I could make this income staying home, I'd stop flying immediately." Makes me think the job must hugely suck now, and I almost never see anyone posting, "This is a great job!". And I'm planning on commuting to SLC, which I read is universally considered a QOL killer.
Considering I actually do have a company that I can make this income at, or close, and don't really need the job if it came to it.... what options are there to actually drop trips, realistically? And how long am I committed for once I do training, if I find the job isn't worth it? Is there some "service committment" like the military after a move?
Seriously, I'm retired military and have other irons in the fire, so, my experience is this: flying commercially ain't what it used to be but it's still better than most. I do it because I love to fly, I like most of the guys I fly with, and I like the jet I fly. I also hope that our next contract will allow me to be less dependent on the other income I've had to rely on since I chose this "profession" in the first place. Take the stuff you read on this forum for what it is....just a bunch of pilots with too much time on their hands. That's what makes it fun.
