Because MORE than one time while riding as an OMC with a vacant seat in the back, on a 76 or 777 with ample luggage storage, I've been told by the CSR at the boarding area that I have to check my bag. And that unless I'm riding in the cockpit my bag CAN'T be up there. Wouldn't even let me take it up to the cockpit with me when asking the CA for a ride.
I would think you could stop by and ask the captain if you can. Keep in mind there isn't much room in the 777 cockpit as you think. I have many times had omc in the back and there bags ride up front with me when on the 757/767. Everyone is different but worth a try.
