Because MORE than one time while riding as an OMC with a vacant seat in the back, on a 76 or 777 with ample luggage storage, I've been told by the CSR at the boarding area that I have to check my bag. And that unless I'm riding in the cockpit my bag CAN'T be up there. Wouldn't even let me take it up to the cockpit with me when asking the CA for a ride.
I usually say something like "Let me first check in with the crew to make sure I can ride. . ." that usually gets me on to the aircraft, then I can see what the bag storage situation is and take it from there.
