Red Flag: Renewed interest in a PERP means Delta has more pilots than it wants.
Delta is smart to try to furlough off the top (the more expensive employees) before furloughing off the bottom (the least expensive employees). Still, this is not a positive sign for staffing overall, despite the fact that upward movement might result.
If there is in-fact, a renewed interest, I believe that it may be in order to help the company plan the retirements. Allow pilots to accept a retirement "bonus" and give the company the ability to mandate a separation time period. Right now the company has no idea when someone might retire and that has the hiring dept nervous.
