I dont know if it is true or not, but back in the days of age 60 retirements, I was told that 17% of the pilots did not make it to age 60, they left earlier - for any/all possible reasons. Again, I have never attempted to independantly verify this, but even though it sounds high, that was the percentage being thrown around. In my class of about 25 pilots, 4 are already gone and the average age of my class today would be around 45-50.
California police, firefighters, and prison guards can retire at age 50 with 90% pay, but that is not sustainable.
