It's actually harder to get on there than at a regional currently. I've had an application in since 2009 (which is coincidentally the last time they accepted off the street applications, and will potentially be the last time they do so for a long time) and I just got the call to interview two weeks ago. If I were to go and get an offer then it'd probably be 2013 or later before I saw the Academy. There are people who've had offers for 2+ years still waiting on a class date. 1/3 of the work force was hired in the last 5 years, so the bubble just recently kind of burst.

Though, to address the OP, you just gotta fly more, man. There's a boom right now, but in the very recent past 800 hours wouldn't have even been enough to get a rejection letter, they'd just toss your resume out. It sucks but you have to be patient. Get another 200-700 hours and you'll stand a much better chance. There's also good flying beyond the regionals if you get a little more time.
