Memphis is more dangerous (I've been mugged at gunpoint as well), but has an infinitely richer culture than IND. I'm a downtown/midtown person and single, so Memphis works well with me. Also, we have recently ended the despotic regime of W.W. and I've noticed eons of improvement as a result.

Downtown is pretty safe I'd say, due to the high police presence. South Main is a great neighborhood that I feel quite safe in. Midtown however, I think is much more shady since it sits next to the peripheries and lacks the numerous police downtown.

To reiterate what everyone else has said though, it seems it would be contingent on if you're married/single/like the suburbs/like more quirky neighborhoods.

Also, being far far away from home right now, I can say I don't go a day without thinking about Memphis BBQ.
