There had been a change in European law. Bumping a passenger is now very very expensive. The policy used to be no upgrades. It has changed with new regulations in Europe.
Too bad that we cannot just make all seats non refundable. That way, you miss your flight, too bad.. thanks for the money. But the "discount" carriers would never go along with that philosophy so it would never work. IF they did, there would never be any reason to overbook a flight.
