There is a very dangerous spot for pilots around that 500+ hour mark for private pilots because they THINK they know it all or that they are a GOOD pilot and get complacent... this is a proven statistic and psychological error. I'm sure there is a hour mark for commercial pilots as well.
I remember that the Navy published a statistic for pilots in the mid 1990's in Approach magazine.
I don't remember all the details and I don't know if the information is available online. I think it was based on either flight time around 4,000 hours or age about 40 years, or both. It stated those pilots were prone to complacency to a higher degree. Similar to what you're saying.
