Default NYC commute from ME/NH/MA

Who here has chosen to commute to NYC from the Boston area for the aircraft/seniority opportunities , and what does that look like as a new FO ?

I know everyone says live “in base” but I’m honestly curious what an NYC commute from the Boston area looks like on an average month. Short call vs long call ? Get a line ? Drive down and sit in CT and wait for the phone to ring ?

Thanks for any insight you can provide!

I don't work for your airline, but I live in NH and I'm based in NYC. The commute to EWR this past summer sucked. I drove most of the time, and that got old pretty quickly. I'm probably changing my base to ORD because there are 20 flights a day between BOS and there, plus MDW, and way less commuters.

im not NYC, but I’ll say this. I used to commute BOS to LGA for the year I did at the regionals some time back. Wasn’t bad tbh. The whole year only once or twice it was a pain and had to run between AA/JB/DL terminal until I got a flight. But that was 2018 so AA had shuttle like dl. Don’t think so anymore not sure.

NYC is very junior. Within first year you can get trips like 1 leg west coast 1 leg back. Rsv is easy there. My friends there only fly like 5 days a month. +- few days.

I would still do BOS 737 as an FO, I don’t care about where I fly, driving to work is great. But if I still lived in BOS I would take NY CA and do that for the years it takes until I get back to BOS. Rsv in Boston goes somewhat senior so you’d hold a line as FO very fast typically in BOS.

good luck!

Way harder than it used to be. AA is bringing back 4 ny-bos flights in a month now that NEA is dead. But yeah, reserve will be short lived. I’d bid long call until getting a line, which is at worst 2 months right now

I know driving wise, it would be worse in emergencies, but would it be easier to commute to PHL from that area? That opens up regional flights out of MHT and mainline flights out of PWM in addition to BOS.

Look into trains. West coast guy, I wish I had practical trains.

One thing to realize is that with a system bid every three months and Mutual Base Exchanges it's easy enough to switch bases. I've been here less than a year and pilots from my class are already "base shopping" and trying out a base for a few months to see how they like the commute and flying. If you don't like LGA, bid PHL(320) or DCA the next bid and try that.
