ORF Commute
Curious to pick the brains of anyone who is a commuter out of ORF. The main options would be NYC and CLT (and to a lesser extent DCA). I am aware there are a fair amount of regional flights (no reservable jumpseat) to NYC and that there are a ton of mainline flights to CLT. I’m also aware that there probably quite a few commuters with the navy base there.
So what has your experience been? Is it tolerable commuting to CLT with a line/LC? How miserable would it be to commute to CA reserve in NYC (with some connections in the northeast, so probably no crash pad)? Nothing set in stone, but circumstances could necessitate this for a few years, so any insight would be appreciated.

No exaggeration, ever flight I’ve done into and out of ORF has had both jumpseeats full on the Bus. I know people who drive to RIC to get to work, which makes RIC tough to commute on at times. I also know quite a few pilots who just drive to DCA.

I’ve flown with dudes who make the Va beach to DCA drive for their lines. Get a vehicle with drivers assist features to make it more tolerable.

I would definitely consider being based in DCA if you live in ORF, mainly because you drive it in a pinch.
I can’t and will not comment about commuting to CLT, I haven’t dealt with that commute for quite a few years. It seems like those CLT flights are always full though…..

Easy answer: drive to DCA for the Bus. Your commute home will always leave the airport exactly when you need it to. Contemplate NYC WB FO when the time is right, but I don't know why one would want to commute by airplane when an easier commute by road is right there (Chesapeake bridges notwithstanding).

To expand on the above, as a line holder I can get 3x blocks of work days. So that is just three drives a month (back and forth).
Really not too bad, all things considered, for a 3:30 drive. Buy a 2020-2022 corolla and equip it with Comma.ai 's driver assist feature.
Your biggest issue is going to be the really early shows, you may have to end up going in the night before unless you want to leave your house at 2AM.

The new corolla is in no shape or form related to the 40 year old Prism.
