Replacement For The Line?

Hi fellow AA pilots. Since APA has apparently decided not to bring back the Line, deos anyone know of a similar forum where we can resume communications outside APA control? Thanks in advance!

A330FoodCritic 11-25-2023 06:45 PM

Guess they got tired of people telling them APA sucks.

There were times when there was useful information on The Line, like that Surgery Plus fiasco.

You're using it right now. The Line isn't coming back.

Its already happening. There a several new or returning screen names who admit they are here because they can't use The Line, including retired guys. I won't miss The Line one bit, and I'm sorry to see this place turn into something similar.

Before I started Indoc this September, I recieved a phone call from a retired capt. After exchanging pleasantries, he asked if I had any questions. I said something to the effect of "nope, APC forums had answered all the questions I had" This resulted in the guy going on a tirade saying that I should only get my info from the line and the FB group. Both of which I didn't have access to. Once I gained access to the line I quickly saw it was toxic AF, and I had no use for it... Not sure about the FB group. I now have access to it, but I never check it. Hopefully APC forums don't become as toxic as the line was.

Sliceback 11-26-2023 07:44 AM

There's also a 'BTL' (below the line) site for new hires (post 2014??).

GrossNavError 11-26-2023 07:46 AM

The facbook groups are just as bad if not worse in some cases.

Also can we confirm the line is gone for good? Haven't seen anything official.

I only ever lurked on CnR/The Line because I don't have FB, but even then it was unbearable most days. At least the one stopgap here won't be the cries of "but it's a UNION HALL! I should be able to post anything I want!"

it's not gone for good. It's coming back according to my reps. I do think it needs a bit more moderating, but we will see.

They need to ban the retired pilots from posting there. They bring nothing to the discussion, they don't even pay dues.

A bit? The place is unhinged.

Haven't people faced disciplinary actions because of the line?

It should come back as "The Auction Block." TT and schedule stuff only; maybe another section for upgrade/recurrent info too.

Name User 11-26-2023 11:04 AM

You have to have things people can vent about in order to attract them to come and post about stuff that actually helps

The traffic throughput was pretty high for a targeted group, a legit question could be answered within an hour on the fleet forums for example

If you ignore the dirty dozen or so on there it gets a lot better, also just stick to the general and fleet specific subs

highfarfast 11-26-2023 11:17 AM

I found the The Line useful in my short time here. I'm a little bit of a forum junkie though and am good at sifthing through the BS to find something I need (I will say I was floored at the amount and the content of the political posts that were allowed). That said, I have never and will never post there since it would publish my name. I don't do FB, twitter, instagram, etc for the same reasons. I'd much rather everyone just move their crap over to APC.

Retirees don't need to be posting in any sections other than those specifically relating to retirement issues. There is a lot of good information available there for retired and those on MDSB. The other sections can be good for active members but it needs serious moderation.

WRT not paying dues, about the only value I got from APA over 20 years was from Aero Medical. Marsha and Kathy are worth their weight in gold. Other than Medical, I figure I'm upside down on the dues to value equation.;)

The only good part about that kind of forum is that douchebags out themselves so you know who to avoid.

Well, they do suck. Tough to hear the truth sometimes.

🤣 haha, ah man.. yea, can do without the cannons. On a side note, is there any way to see the progress of the ALPA card drive? I've talked with numerous captains about it who had no idea a drive was even taking place. Whoever started the drive is really not doing a good job of getting the word out.

Get a lanyard and wear it. Talk about it with your co workers. I am. Seems like most of my FOs are up to speed. Captains were hit or miss before I upgraded

Yes. I'm forgetting if people were fired for what they posted. Definitely got unpaid time off. But it's a union hall, it's a 1st Amendment issue (uh...the government is involved in the discussion or the discipline...).

No, it’s not a first amendment issue. Guys have been fired because of posts on the line, it’s literally in the warning you click to enter the line.

the union hall argument for why the line had to be completely uncensored/unmoderated is complete nonsense.

the government didn't fire him, a private company did

In no way was that a 1st amendment issue

During the last section 6 a scheduling SME put some good stuff out countering some of the BS that was on The AArena. I asked if he could put it there. He said that he would not post on The AArena, it was a good place to get yourself fired.

Sliceback 11-28-2023 06:12 AM

My "but it's a union hall, it's a 1st Amendment issue, was dripping with sarcasm about the wailing wall participants who spout that dearth of logic.

The SME's not going to get fired for doing basic stuff. The pilots that knew the people that got fired, or unpaid time off, weren't shocked at most of the rulings. But as a former negotiator said, even today, "there's not enough time in the day to contradict the B.S. that's out there. That included C&R/The Line.

No. I never once saw anything like that. Some political stuff but 99% are conservatives anyway. No one(not many) to argue with.

I think pilots were getting into trouble with the company because company tools(scum of the earth) would send screen shots to mgmt. RLA stuff. Maybe some harassment. They claim, and it's probably true, that they were spending a lot of resources defending pilots in hearings because of The Line. That is, however, their job. I suspect that a lot of those hearings were from Facebook or other social media and were lumped in with The Line.

APA also got hit with some "official" pushback on censorship issues when moderators would remove stuff. Particularly from one very senior very well respected pilot.

The final straw was probably self preservation because a lot of card drive talk was happening. They suppressed threads titled "card drive" or something similar but the topics inside other, unrelated-to-card-drive, threads were most likely too much to keep up with. So they went nuclear and shut the whole thing down under the guise of "protecting pilots." They weren't going to allow that information delivery source to stick around.

There was also coordinated targeting against individuals who argued against the contract during negotiations. Some of which was bordering on menacing harassment. The boomers only had one thing in mind, their retros.

I mean I definitely saw some bigotry. Not saying it was common, but it wasn’t unheard of.

Listen, if that forum was in a workplace setting, half those people would be fired lol. Dudes talk wild on there.

A boomer yelling at you to get off their lawn is not capable of being menacing. LoL

Those guys were all a bunch of whinny children. I hope no one gave them any real consideration.

Some of those dudes were so pathetic. It was unreal watching them clamor for that ****ty deal. A couple in particular, one of them being a BOD.

There was grossness both for and against the deal, just like there was grossness against vaccines and for vaccines, against Trump and for Trump, against Biden and for Biden, etc, etc, etc. There were super gross retired pilots (one in particular was so over the top, he was highly entertaining, if not a bit scary in his thought process), super gross current pilots.

It needed moderators, but that was controversial, so 🤷‍♂️.

Like everywhere else 20% can't get along with another 20% while the 60% majority watches in disgust.
