US West to recall remaining furloughed pilots

This was mentioned in another thread but thought it deserved it's own thread.

The company announced yesterday that it will recall the remaining west furloughed pilots. Congrats to those that want to come back and the ones on the east that want to return to PHX. Hopefully it is a sign of the strength of PHX and that it will indeed remain as it is or grow.

I've flown with two west guys that took recall to the east and it was a pleasure working with both.

cactusmike 08-08-2013 05:40 PM

This will be bittersweet for some guys because they have to give up lines on the east to come back to PHX or lose their PHX base rights and position on the Nicolau, from what I have been told. There is also a question of seat locks for non airbus guys. We also have guys flying overseas and for other airlines that have to make a decision before the SLI is done. Some guys wanted to bypass until they could hold a line.

Nothing is ever simple, I guess. Good news is there will be PHX upgrades, about 30 to 35.

Flyby1206 08-08-2013 06:15 PM

How many guys did the West have on furlough?

I agree. We had guys bypass the E190 to come back to 737 or better only to get displaced to..........the E190.

Good to see upgrades out there, too long coming.

I thought they could come back to the east at any time? I didn't realize they were truly on furlough. I'm glad they were able to go back work.

They could. Every furloughed West pilot has the option to come to the east. The ones that chose to exercise that option can all hold 190 CA or stay on the bus as senior RSV or secondary block holders. The more senior guys would be primary block holders I believe

When you have your heart attack or aneurysm, I will move up a number, fantastic!

Have a nice day :-)

Yes they could but not at their west seniority, which was an issue when they were first offered east positions. They came on below any third lisst guys that had been hired before the west guys took the recall east. The ones that went east basically did not have anything else to do or they did want to fly out of CLT or PHL in a few cases. It has worked out ok for them I guess with all the hiring and growth. There have been recalls to the west but these 66 guys bypassed or were never recalled west.

No they went east under the new hires and third listers thanks to our disgrace of a union. They now hold 190 capt because a 2011 hire can hold it.

CaptainBigWood 08-09-2013 02:29 AM

Isn't it going to be great to all be under APA. Just ask TWA about ALPA and APA.

Check your facts. This is completely false.

Actually, that is only partially correct. Initially they came back to the East as new hires, with new "East" dates of hire. (Yes, behind some third-listers).

However, that "disgrace of a union" (as you put it) went to management to rectify the situation. It was the union that came up with the plan to fix their seniority based off of the Transition Agreement statement that "all pilots hired after the merger" (us third-listers) "will be junior to the pilots of both pre-merger lists." They reordered the list to put the West guys back where they belong.

It was the company that screwed up their seniority initially, but it was that "disgrace of a union" that made it right... Believe me, I'm no fan of our union, but they did do some things right....

Now the interesting question is what happens to the West guys that took recall to the East? Do they have to go back West or risk losing their place on the West list (get a new DoH based on East recall)? That seems a bit harsh considering a bunch bought houses and moved across the country to take recall to the East. That would be a costly move, just to get moved back East again in the next several years (after the AA merger finishes). Or will the company make a deal with USAPA to let them stay East since we're so close (relatively) to a final settlement to all of this?

R57 relay 08-09-2013 07:09 AM

Thanks Andy, maybe he will believe you.

I hope the company does the right thing with the west furloughs. These guys have been pawns and in limbo long enough.

The one that USAPA filed for furlough out of seniority.

I don't recall reading that one.

It's on the website. USAPA argued that all third listers should be furloughed before anyone hired before them on east or west. They lost it. Had they won I don't think any west pilots would have been furloughed at all, or at least not as many and the would have been recalled quickly.

I thought this was the basis for the original ordering of west furloughs going east. I was surprised that their seniority was corrected.

I will believe that when I see it.
Just like everything else in this business.
No way to predict anything more than 8 hours into the future.

You and your crazy optimism. (That's sarcasm, not mocking)

Just flew a trip with an AWA furlough working on the East side. They are not happy about being recalled to go on the bottom of the West list back in PHX. Holding a good schedule on the East. Politics of company and seniority dispute causing hardship for a fellow pilot.

Is there any remote possibility of a new hire getting a PHX spot?

Yes. If they cant get enough furloughs to come back they will use new hires to fill the remaining open positions.

I've heard if they don't they lose their seniority on the west.

Yeah, thirdlisters will be able to bid it and newhires (also thirdlisters)

Would they have to give up their east seniority('08 hire, for example)? A buddy of mine is in this situation

well their west seniority is going to be way higher in the end.

Depends. If the AA merger goes through one of the proposed remedies from the west in their DJ suit is to allow the west to have a seat at the MB process. If we don't start the process with the Nic then they could come out more junior if they go back.

KillingMeSmalls 08-23-2013 12:37 PM

When is SLI "snapshot" anyways?

othello 08-26-2013 05:17 PM

What is the timeline on the recall? Is there a date that they must commit to returning or be available for a class date?

I assume that the west needs to fill some positions B4 the rest rule change in Jan

ncpilot624 08-28-2013 11:10 AM

I don't think the west boys will be bothered by the new FAR's. I could be wrong there. Have any of you PHX boys heard any rumors as to when they will publish the recall bid on wings?

othello 09-11-2013 07:57 PM

Ok I see they posted on wings. Where are these 48 320 FO's coming from?

Equipment/Position 757 CA 320 CA 757 FO 320 FO
Permanent Vacancies 2 16 0 48
Permanent Reductions 0 0 0 0
Projected Lineholders as of Aug 2014 48 536 50 526
Projected Reserves as of Aug 2014 14 82 13 88
Projected Upgrades = 18

There were 66 on furlough. There are 66 positions on this bid.

LIOG41 09-11-2013 08:46 PM

Will this also show future vacancies in PHX?

Yes the West pilot flying in CLT had to return to PHX against their wishes. Holding a line and good schedule in CLT only to return to PHX as reserve. I was told that USAPA wanted them to be able to use their DOH with the West and stay in CLT. That didn't fly with management with the risk of angering the AOL. So the junior West comes out worst than DOH.

RVR600 09-12-2013 07:51 AM

FALSE.

None of the AWA guys and girls flying in the East operation have been forced to return to PHX. Yet.

The next West "recall class" is currently scheduled for January.

FALSE.

Yet is correct, but for all intents and purposes they are being forced back. Just because it hasn't happened yet doesn't mean it isn't happening.
