Bonus Money?
What's everyone going to do with their bonus money? Save...spend it?
|
Pilots getting bonus money?
1) Ex wives will get a lot of it 2) Really bad investment decisions. Probably down payments on rental properties that will get them way in over their head. 3) Lots of other shiny bad decisions showing up in the employee parking lot |
All towards the wife's student loans and to recover from first year pay.
|
Donate to new hires?
|
I can promise that 100% of the pilots will have significant taxes withheld on it! :)
|
I know one guy who is buying a Segway for each of his kids.

Ha! Yes, iPads are evil! We must show how tough we are by standing up to management and carrying flight kits out of disgust! Right PHL reps?

College fund for my four-year old boy. Going to straight to Fidelity, as I decided against a 429 plan.
He can use it for school, or let it ride and add to it for a nice retirement. Can you imagine 30K in a retirement fund at 4 years old??!! I don't want him to be dependent upon anything or anyone in his future like I am. |

I don't want him to be dependent upon anything or anyone in his future like I am. I started saving for college when mine were 1 and 3. Never regretted it. Thinking about starting a college fund for my, as of now, non-existent grandchildren. And justjack nailed it. My children got a lot of education courtesy of passes. My daughter recently took a job in a big city far away. I asked her if she would have been so comfortable doing that if she hadn't traveled, spent time on planes, the tube in London, the Metro in Paris etc. She said "No way!" Merry Christmas. |
All my money is going to my roth and 401k.

And just for planning purposes, how does one do it right?
For example, if you're in the 25% income bracket ($35,351 - $85,650) you only owe 25% + any state/local taxes on that bonus money. Maximize your deductions to lower your taxable income and you will get some of that bonus money back. Since you had to ask, I'm going to go ahead and encourage you to learn how to calculate your own per diem deductions and not pay someone to do that for you—it's a lot easier to calculate CONUS/OCONUS deductions than many think!!! |

Taxes are taken out of bonus checks at a higher rate, but in the end you only owe a percentage based on your income bracket. Think of the difference between regular tax rates and bonus taxes as a short term govt loan. —The govt would benefit from you not dedicating time/money to maximizing your return.
