USAPA Uniform Survey

Looks like nothing has been decided on. Usapa just put out a survey on what we would like. It does bother me that there is a vote for "mandatory" items. I don't think there should be tyranny by majority but never the less we're being given a choice.

Vote smart and don't be selfish in your opinions. If you want to wear something and think it looks good make it optional don't force.

Majority rules. The consolation for the minority it the right to still whine. :D

Who needs a survey? Just figure out what Hummel wants and you can be guaranteed that the CLT and PHL reps will be against it and it'll get stalled at the BPR level.

ha! so true and sad.

VenetianFryCook 12-19-2013 10:33 AM

The survey is in response to a resolution that was brought (I think) by PHX and was pretty widely supported by the board. The union didn't get any feedback on the company's uniform survey and wanted to get a good idea of what our pilots wanted. They'll take it to the company and APA. It may not make a lick of difference in the long run, but I completed the survey and I'll give USAPA credit for trying to do the right thing here.

I want voluntary emblems of a Cactus on the hat and the shoe sole.

Whale Driver 12-19-2013 08:12 PM

Really? W T F cares? They pay for it, you wear it, you cash the check. Really?

Truthfully it won't matter too much, but I would like it black so I can still were my Sears polyester machine washable pants with my Brooks Brothers black wool overcoat.

CanoePilot 12-19-2013 09:05 PM

I don't know why there is even a question about all this. We're supposed to "adopt and go" to all of Americans ways so why don't we just take their uniforms and "go"? Buying 5000 uniforms is better than 15000. Plus there is nothing wrong with the current Aa uniform.

I think way too many guys have way too much invested in black tennis shoes to go with their leather jacket to change colors.;)

ForeverFO 12-21-2013 06:46 AM

As an AA guy, I'm probably in the minority when I say this, but I wouldn't mind a uniform change, specifically one to a darker shade.

Sensibility must abound - no weird submarine commander outfits, fabric that wears well and doesn't get shiny, minimal bling. And multiple vendors as well.

And of course - no hats. ;)

You know, if we ALL get new uniforms, it'll feel much less a "We vs. Them" thing. It'll be a We vs. Management thing.

Oh well, in that case, maybe management can come up with three distinctly different uniforms... maybe they will try an "It's a small world after all" theme.

One thing I think that's very important, that I have not seen brought up, is ensuring that express pilots do not wear the same uniform as mainline.

The mainline uniform is one that is earned. I hope that APA and USAPA push for this.

That's not that big of a deal for me. I just care about stuff that will effect me personally. Having an eagle pilot wearing the same uniform doesn't effect me. Having to wear a hat and losing my paid for leather jacket does.

Honestly I think letting the "American Eagle" guys wear the same uniforms as us makes a mandatory hat less likely. They would then need to buy 20000+ hats and uniforms vs 15000.

I completely agree; let's not water down the uniform.

Management has assigned the express pilots to fly all the routes I used to fly 15 or 20 years ago. Why shouldn't management give them my uniform too? :p

Uh, err, daze? Water down? Have you seen some mainline pilots in their uniform?

We put the mainline name on the outside to pull a fast on on the traveling public, why not on the most important part?

If it has the mainline name on it, hold it to the same standard and don't worry about the little stuff.

IMHO as always.

ForeverFO 12-22-2013 06:05 AM

No offense to my Eagle bro's... DFW is of course AA's fortress. I operate out of Terminal D. We have gobs of Eagle pilots there either deadheading or commuting, but almost no originations.

Walking down the hallways there, you see pilots eating, reading, snoozing, and the only real way to tell the difference is in the shape of the wings and the crest of the hat, if there is one. But there is one other major difference... When I see an AA pilot that looks like a high school kid, I don't have to focus on the wings. It's Eagle. ;)

There are a shocking number of what look like children operating RJ's these days. I guess in the end, it's just me getting freaky old.

"Get off my lawn!!!" :D

Rudder1 12-22-2013 06:14 AM

on the flip side, there are many younger pilots being hired at mainline and get the looks of "*** are you doing our crew room ratjet driver".

I'm getting dirty looks around the airport, I can only assume I'm being mistaken for a PSA pilot since there's no difference in uniform other than a subtle line on our IDs.

R57 relay 12-22-2013 07:17 AM

Or if you are young, a west pilot? ;-)

wow. just wow. really?

And I wonder why there has been no change here.... guys like this not worrying about the important stuff.

After the Nic came out and the East melt-down was in full swing, one of my captains gave his four stripe epaulettes to a cute, early twenties flight attendant. As we walked through Charlotte to the hotel van, the result was absolutely spectacular.

You have to remember this BS has been going on for a while. I was one of the young ones when AWA/US merged, now I'm pushing 40.

Just wait until the Nic is implemented, after having flushed >$600 mil in career earnings down the pooper. If done again the effect will be epically spectacular.

CaptainBigWood 12-23-2013 05:18 AM

Never personally witnessed an East Pilot meltdown over the NIC.
Just a bunch quit and went to Jet Blue and Virgin, and ended up with ugly uniforms and more money.

I was one of the east young ones when the merger went through, at around 40. I said that only at US Air could I be called a baby. Now the east has the young(er) ones.

For those that dodged having tons of west guys come in on top of them, your math is off and you forget the intangibles. But, whatever, different situation now.

are the rumors of double-breasted "Delta" style uniforms with mandatory hats true?

I voted for triple-breasted jackets and Mexican police officer hats.

They are unfounded rumors.

othello 12-23-2013 02:12 PM

The Capt I am working this trip with claims the Hat and Double breasted is a done deal.

He is to old to remember his source. & he currently wears a hat so I am not giving him much credit.

Parker has said he doesn't care what the planes look like. I just can't imagine him buying 12,000 hats & double breasted jackets so we can look like Delta.

CanoePilot 12-23-2013 02:19 PM

rumors are like *********s, everyone has them and they all stink.

I hope so. Man that would be cool. I always wanted to work for Delta, but wasn't good enough to pass the interview. US Airways hired me though, and now's my chance to finally look as good as them.

ghilis101 12-23-2013 02:35 PM

I think even Emily Post would agree the double breasted jacket is an odd thing for a 21st century airline. Although im told the reason higher ups want it is because its impossible to wear it unbuttoned, where as you'll see single breasted coats open all the time. But single breast is meant to be worn open when seated, if its correctly tailored.

With all that being said, bring back year 2000 pay rates and youll see everyone not care whatsoever what uniform they're wearing.

R57 relay 12-23-2013 02:56 PM

The image of myself and so many of my co-workers in a double breasted jacket fills me with holiday cheer!

Nope. I saw a DL Van God with his Sky God unbuttoned just the other day. A sight to see. Must have been "acquired" not "hired"!;)

Haha. Ok so its "possible" but with that flap flying around everywhere its annoying even for the person wearing it. Van god and sky god, hahaha!
