Same goes for coffee. Can't count how many times someone offers to grab a round of coffee on a turn and one of the FAs pipes up about a machiatto half caf latte.

To fix both this and the bar tab simply say you'll only pay for coffee or beer. If they want something else it's their issue. No need to have your generosity used poorly.

Story time... six day trip, multiple Atlantic crossings. We're in a nice restaurant at RDU. Capt decides to treat everyone to wine at dinner, which was amazingly nice of him, since 10 people showed up.

He tapped the wine list, said "This Cabernet please, 3 bottles" and out comes the wine.

It was exquisite wine. We all raved. Then the bill came. The waitress thought he had tapped on some obscure vintage rather than the decent table wine he intended. We drank 3 bottles of $140 wine. The bill was close to $500 for all the beverages.

He paid up like a man rather than make a scene. We all tried to reimburse him, but he refused.

I don't remember what it was, but it was d----d good!! :D
