I never understood the whole TEM thing? It basically is just teaching people to practice common sense. I Don't understand why that requires hours of instruction.

Why is the LUS TEM so superior and that going to the LAA TEM is such a big loss?

Because it was easy, covered the important stuff, and encouraged learning as opposed to playing stump the dummy. There was no BS. Been through 4 airlines' training programs and the US Airways program was BY FAR the best.

Actually, LAA adopted the LUS TEM model that's been developed, refined and perfected for over a decade...and they mock it.

The LUS TEM model came about after the string of accidents in 90s. I'd venture to guess the culture in our cockpits and the ability for any crew member to speak up and trap errors is second-to-none industry-wide.

The way we debrief training events and catch each other's errors (as well as our own) and recognize them before we even get to that point is fantastic. It's a joy to see it mocked by Super Senior Superior CAAptains.

I don't see the TEM model mocked at all, in fact I think it was a huge step in the right direction and am glad we have it through LUS. Who's mocking it? How can you mock something that enhances safety?

If anything, the TEM actually modernizes AA's traditionally ancestral-worship style cockpit culture. It's a good thing.

As far as the 1000 and 500ft calls.... I can go either way. they don't bother me, but a silent approach also didn't bother me. Just speak up if you're outside the parameters (which is what we used to do.)

AA's cockpit culture has actually come a long way, we still have a ways to go but I've seen huge improvements since I've been hired here.

We still do plenty of ridiculous ancestor-worshippy things that do need to change eventually. FO calculating fuel every 15mins in a hold... Captains making PAs while taxiing... Silly things like that which probably existed in the DC-3 days but everyone else has moved on and adapted to the 21st century!

73, glad to hear the AA cockpit is up to par. I believe the TEM/CRM AT LUS is excellent.

Go read C&R. Plenty are mocking the TEM model and "being in the Green/Yellow/Red". Plenty are mocking the debrief/self-critique post sim session. Plenty are mocking the stabilized approach calls (even though LUS leads the industry in the fewest unstable approaches).

I like you, aa73. You seem very level-headed and I always enjoy reading your posts. Please know that I direct none of my ill-will towards you.

I left the Airbus to go to the 767 last year (Under RC7). Felt like stepped back into the dark ages. Many things need to be changed with the wAAy things are done around here, but I doubt that'll happen in my lifetime (and I have 30 years left).

EMB, that's because the 75/76 program is a very old-school type of fleet. The LAA 737 program is awesome, right up there with the Airbus.

I must have missed the TEM mocking on C&R. In any case, if they mock it, it's really their loss... I think it's a great tool.

Bro hug!

Right back at ya!

While I love the airplane and the flying, I'm very much looking forward to being able to bid back to the Airbus. Reserve is no fun now.

What I liked best about the USAir program is that everything was standardized from fleet to fleet...checklists, flows, SOPs, callouts, etc. It made transitioning from one airplane to another almost seamless.

At LAA, it seems that every time you change fleets, it's like going to work for a different company.
