Logging Heavy "Augmented" Crew Time
Anyone have a firm grasp on how to properly log all the time you are not in the seat on an augmented crew? I.E. you are a FO who is in the seat for 4 hours during cuise but not in the seat for the other 5 hours? Would you create an "other" category in your logbook much like the USAF does?
Background: 747 FO (PIC typed) on a 3 or 4 person augmented flight. Thanks! |
This is a damn good question. I never could get a clear answer on it but here is what I did. We had 2 Capts and 1 F/O as an augmented crew. I only logged the time I was in the seat and then in the comments section I put "Augmented Crew" and the total time.
To make it even more confusing both Capts names were on the flight plan, so how do ya log PIC on that? I still logged the time I was in the seat as PIC. |
I wish I had your problem...LOL

As an IRO I only logged time in the seat-never PIC even when in the left seat.

Thanks for the answers... so on a 9 hour flight, having 5 hours in the seat, would I log a total of 9.0 total duration and 5 SIC? or would you put the SIC & total duration as only 5??

Since there doesn't seem to be a definitive answer - I figure I'm a required crew member for that flight, I'm logging time the entire time.

I say go with the conservative approach because at this stage of the game we are not time building anymore. |

Of course unless you can find some documentation that says otherwise. |

Mainly because most IROs have not been checkout as Capt, only given a type rating. Our situation was a bit different as there were two lines Capts on the flight because most of the f/os were not typed. But if 2 Capts are flying together and both are list on the flight plan as Capt, I still say you can log the time in the seat. |

So, if you go for an interview and the interviewer notices 17 hrs in a PIC or SIC or TT columns, how do you explain that? You were not a functioning crew member for the entire 17 hrs. You may have been a required crew for the augment but not functioning the entire time.
I say go with the conservative approach because at this stage of the game we are not time building anymore. If I'm SIC, well - I'm too damn lazy to figure out what part I was actually in the seat. I'm logging the whole flight. If and interviewer asks - go back to my initial response. Like you said, at this stage of the game I'm not building time - just marking it! In fairness, I haven't yet had to contend with the ultra-long haul junk - mine tend to max out at 12-14 hours, but I still just can't be bothered to care what part I'm in or out of the seat. If I'm there and I'm working, I'm logging. |
