New ATP ground school reqs?
Could anyone with understanding of the new ATP written requirements that will be going into effect August 1st of this year explain them to me? I have heard multiple different explanations and as I am coming up on the end of my commercial rating, I'd like to figure this thing out. My understanding is that if you do not have your ATP written done by Aug. 1 of this year, then you will be required to take an ATP course consisting of ground school and sim time? Any info would be great, thanks in advance.

You have it correct. If you're just coming up on your commercial I'm guessing ~250-300TT. The pre-August written will be good for 24 months. If there is any way you see yourself having 1500 hours before August 2016 then go ahead and take the written.

I will be eligible for a restricted ATP at 1000 hrs. I wonder if there will be some sort of amendment to this rule just like there is with the 1500 hour rule? Also, why? Why now? Is this purely FAA driven or is this still fall out from Colgan 3407?

I have heard second hand that a regional recruiter was telling student pilots at a job fair that they'd be willing to accept an expired written. Regardless, I think I'd rather just get it done if I can before August 1 and roll the dice. Can't imagine what the price tag on the ground course with the sim time is going to be.

Is it no longer required to have the prerequisites for the ATP before taking the written? Seems I remember that I had to bring my logbooks to the FAA to be signed off before sitting the exam. Although that was in 1990 and know much has changed.
