And another Russian General Bites the Dust
Fifth Russian General is killed in Ukraine. He was a Lieutenant General, equal to a US Army Major General (2 star):

At least they're leading from the front. Although that's not necessarily a great idea in the era of ESM and precision fires.

Do you think that’s because they’re leaders or their CCC is AFU?
In the modern era though, a C3 node attracts precision fire. |

I have no ready way of confirming if it that is true. If it is so, a tad bit surprising at such carelessness. Or could it be arrogance? ( I should add that I am personally ignorant of the technology involved, so can be easily mislead regarding communication tech and related targeting. I would take no offence at being educated as to fundamental errors in my post) |

An Polish newspaper stated that Russian officers/generals have been using ordinary cell phones, making then easy to find and target even if far in the rear.

Ground wars take time
Heck, even air wars take time.

Regardless if it's all true, I can imagine we are gaining a ton of Intel on this operation and the relative ineptitude of their military. I can imagine this is not the show of force the upper echelons thought would happen. That's probably, at least in part, to the culture of fear within the Kremlin and massive corruption. It turns out military parades for the overlords don't actually prepare you for combat.
They continue to tighten the noose: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...LL-ROGGIO.html People forget that in Desert Storm it took the combined US/German/French/Saudi/Kuwaiti/and other forces 7 weeks just to get the Iraqis out of Kuwait. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time...ar_(1990–1991) Or that the eventual NATO mission to Kosovo had an even longer timeline: https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/front.../etc/cron.html Barring something taking Putin out of power this could well go on for years and although the Ukrainians are putting up a pretty good fight they are still losing, and their infrastructure is behind destroyed in the process. Just the 3.5 million refugees that have left the country and an estimated 10 million (out of 45 million) people internally displaced means the economy is shot. And Europe, China, and India are still buying Russian oil and natural gas. Those are pretty huge markets. |
Let me know when they take out a Field Marshal.

We have not done that in a very long time, short of actual regime changes subsequent to a war.
There is a very, very big difference between "staging" a coup, and aligning with or even aiding an opposition party. Helping a good cause is not a bad thing (unless you're the bad guy). Did we do it in the 50's and 60's? Sure, and Frank Church put an end to it when I was a little kid. |
