What is a carveout?

I gather that it is a scheduling term, something to do when a trip begins or ends? That's about as far as I got on my own.

Genetically, it's an exception to rule, or a rule benefiting a specific group.

Apologies for being dense, but the lightbulb hasn't come on yet.

Could you give me a for instance?

An example would be union-authorized raise/bonus for new-hires. Benefits the company because it helps recruiting, benefits the noobs, and benefits senior lifers (typically union leadership) because it helps keep the company stable long-term. Doesn't directly benefit most of the pilot group, and is in fact counter-productive because it gives away a negotiating item.

Another was the recent SKW pay raise. 1% across the board but very senior people got a big 401k enhancement.

Stuff like that.

The big one would be the cargo carveout for the 117 flight and duty time limits. The Air Transport Association of America has a carveout for its members reducing the rest required under 121.485(b).
