Many pilots have a gross conceptual error about freedom of speech and union protections.

Our best union protections are for issues which are spelled out in the CBA.

But I've never seen or heard of a CBA which grants broad freedom of speech (labor organizing speech is protected by federal law anyway).

So union members are essentially in the same boat as any other employee, and are subject to the company policy manual. If you gain media (or SM) attention for egregious public speech the company's first instinct is to fire your arse on the spot. You'll get the union disciplinary process, but there are behaviors for which you don't get warnings, suspensions, second chances and this is one of those.

Read your applicable company policy... you'll be surprised at how restrictive it is (very)... you have no legal or union right to any public speech which the company doesn't care for or want to be associated with.
