Default Multiple applications

Lori -

A few people in the forum have mentioned being asked by prospective employers if they have applications/resumes submitted with other companies.

What is the company trying to gauge by asking this? Loyalty? Desire?

Do they think that if you have in an application with another company that they can't trust you? That you will leave them at the drop of a hat?

I just thinking that in this work environment that you need to have all your bases covered. If you have applied to one company and haven't heard one way or another; do they really expect you not to have applied anywhere else in 4-6 months time?

So my question is.........what is the right answer here if they ask - and should they be asking this?
And don't say the truth I got that part - but I'm asking if there is a easier way of saying YES.

Another thread on the forum even has dicussion about basically having gone through Higher Power for a type rating and ATP and then applying to a cargo carrier and what that company might make out of your intentions since they don't fly 737s.

Your thoughts?

I'm sure Lori will give you a better answer, but I seem to remember that this question was probing "industry motivation". That is - your desire to move your career onward and upward.

While many have fallen into a the trap of "No Sir, I only want to work here!" think of it from a recruiters perspective - why would you limit your career and every credential you've earned to one airline?

If asked, tell the truth and redirect the probe as a positive: "Yes I do have other applications on file but Brand X airlines is my first choice as an employer and I'm excited to be here....."

This is similar probe to "What will you do if you're not successful in this interview process?" Again, it's a question about your motivation to advance your career and not so much an indication of how the interview is going. Would you crawl under a rock or apply elsewhere?

Take this with a grain of salt as it's coming from a guy who hasn't worn an interview suit in 18 years.

HSLD -

I agree with your perspective about being positive and looking for advancement and the opportunity to work with a successful business; but t he feeling of the posts I was reading had a darker feeling to them. Like the compnay would actually hold it AGAINST you if you **had the gall to apply elsewhere** then you must not REALLY want to work at company X.

Well I've never worn an interview suit so I feel more out of my comfort zone than ever before. Thanks for the reply though. Your experience is appreciated.

That sounds more along the lines of the UAL/late 90's style of interview. As screwed up as "legacy" interview practices can still be (when there WAS hiring), I think they have finally evolved past that.

Agree with HSLD,
It is expected. They generally want to know if you are interested in the industry. They are all sure enough that you really do want to be at their airline the most.
I did tell HR I had other apps out and was in the pool of a competitor when asked directly. The other companies had similiarities to each other (profitable, similiar business, etc) In other words, there was a specific reason for each app, that I knew the details of the airline I was applying, and that I would be very happy to spend a career with their company. If you know what is going on, current intel, etc. they will believe you really want to get hired and stay at their company. I suspect what they really fear more is the individual who after considerable investment of business capital to bring onboard, decide to quit the industry. Apply away!

Remember.... every employer wants to know that you really want to work for them. It all comes down to the all-mighty buck - Return on Investment. Are you a sound financial investment for them?

And don't forget that they also know the game. If you were to tell me that my airline is the only one you have applied to I would be very skeptical and you surely would need to convince me.

Illustrate why you want to work for THEM.

Make sense?
