How soon? (is too soon)

y'know... here's the reality. Very few airlines are hiring right now. So even if you apply now it will likely go in some sort of file for later review. If they accept it at all.
So, if an airline will accept your application then why not submit it? Do the necessary homework to complete it now while there is no pressure.
The really important thing to remember is to update it - particularly when you are one-year out. Then you will want to update regularly.

You are right on target. The majors are all in a "downsizing" mode right now and it looks like it could be some time before things turn around. Will they eventually ? Absolutely, but it could be a l-o-n-g haul. This industry is cyclic and always has been.
At United, the company is giving out Leave of Absences for up to 60 months with no questions asked. Those being furloughed are being told it could be up to 3+ years before things improve and they get recalled, if not longer.
For pilots leaving the military, perhaps looking somewhere else is an option; corporate flight departments, freight carriers such as UPS, FedEx offer great careers and perhaps the Part 121 Charter operations offer a start point for someone looking to break into the civilian side of things.
Just a thought from an 'ol freight dog....
