Open letter:

In the last few weeks we have had two accidents that could be attributed to simple pilot error. I believe that we are in transition between a fully automated flight environment and a partial manual flown flight environment. The hazard is that hand flying skills will fade in the presence of heavy automation and lead to increased accidents.

It will become evident that we have moved passed a time where hand flying is a viable flight condition and into an era where full automation will become the normal situation.

If you are in your twenties you will see the advent of artificial intelligence and ground control in the flight deck. As pilots we will be reduced to monitoring elements whose primary function is to serve as emergency back up. Wages, job satisfaction, and working conditions will continue to fall to a point just above flight attendant. All the while you are investing the cost of a starter house to become trained and educated.

Think about it. The sun is setting.

So, which airline are you a manager for?

He is the CA of and the manager of a Cessna 152.......... the industry left he years ago.... Pilot "error"...has always been and will continue to be the leading cause of accidents in the modern era.

Reality check.. this already exists. A/P on except during landing. Which BOTH of these accidents occurred during. The most critical phase of flight.

As usual Sky, you make some valid or partially valid points about aviation, and then make the crucial error of spinning it beyond any sort of plausibility. Stick to the facts! You'll get better mileage. Glad things are going well for you and the boys these days.

Just another trolling post from our resident pilot that couldn't hack it professionally. I have no problem with some healthy pessimism, but this guy obviously only does it to make himself feel better about his decision to leave the industry.

Save this thread and look back in ten years at what this eccentric bitter internet troll had to say in regards to predicting the future of aviation. By then however you most likely will have moved on to other careers. (or wish you had ;))

The bottom line is that legions of MBA's at the airlines are diligently working everyday to figure out how to reduce their costs. Pilots have to become cheaper than computers if they wish to remain employed.

Crashes lately have been solidly in the human error category. Eventually the weak link will be removed or minimized from the equation. Wages and working conditions will continue to suffer. Those of us who are 45 plus should escape the worst of it but if you are in your 20's you can rest assured that transport category planes will be fully automated in 20 years.
