Where will all the UPS 727 pilots go?

Whaddya all think?

I am guessing the DC8 and/or 757. I am hoping not many senior to me go to ONT. :)

UPSFO4LIFE 02-27-2007 01:44 PM

My guess is the 8 and the 300. They will be in the shock of a lifetime if they go the 75. Well, these guys are in for a shock no matter where they go. Flying 45 minutes a leg days are gone for these folks.

Pilot7576 02-27-2007 02:10 PM

upsfo...

I would tend to agree...unless they want to totally change the type of flying they have been doing for the last 18 yrs...the 8 and the bus have the most similar schedules. Unless they are very senior, going to the 75 domestic will be a rude awakening! Freightpuppy talks about how great ontario flying is, so most of them will probably go there (at least the senior fo's) <BG>.

Here's hoping the senior 30 or so cpts stay out of domestic 75.......

True. You know what though? For as much as people like to say how bad 757 domestic is, it sure is pretty senior. Things that make ya go hmmmmmm.

Freighter Captain 02-27-2007 02:14 PM

Look, the reason these guys stayed on the 727 so many years is the great Reserve system. Meaning, sit around Louisville and hardly fly at all. Guys were blocking 100 hours a year or less. Since they like their massive amount of time off- and who can blame then- I suspect they will stick around SDF and bid reserve on the 757 domestic, A300, and Dc-8. They won't be headed to ANC or ONT without a compelling reason. My .02.

dudemize 02-27-2007 04:46 PM

What is so bad about the 757 domestic flying? I assume the 75 flies longer legs, is there anything else with regards to scheduling that makes it less desirable?

UPSFO4LIFE 02-27-2007 05:09 PM

75 domestic has some OK lines but the key is staying out of SDF. If you get an SDF line sitting the sort, you most likely will end up on the west coast after flying 2 legs into the sort. If you avoid the west coast, you will then probably get 4 legs a night working about 10 hours.

And good luck to those who think they can come to the 75 and sit in SDF on reserve and not work. Right now they are having to bring Z guys over to fill all the open trips on the domestic side. I don't know ANY domestic captains sitting aound not working right now.

Oh and also the 75 has lost a lot of its day flying to the 300. That really sucks!!

fr8rcaptain 02-28-2007 02:37 PM

How to bid, and why....

The first 21 senior Captains WILL NOT go to the MD11 SDF because they are all AFRAID...

The MD11 SDF lifestyle and schedules are horrific, with terrible lines, long trips well in excess of the 727 Captains normal 48 minute leg, bad catering, and questionable hotels in out of the way backwards international destinations. If I were one of the top 21 Captains, I'd go to the Scarebus or 757 MIA, or ANC on the 747-400 or MadDog. Now that's livin!!!!!!:D

The MD11 in SDF is scary...

The lines are terrible.......

Life sucks.......

Repeat after me: "I need to change my system bid to ANC MD11....."

UPSF/Ofor Life,
If the 757 is so tough and the 727 is so easy, you know 45 minute legs, then why didn't you or any of the other 757 guys bid to the 727 all these years?? I never understood why all the 757 guys whine and moan about the scheds, just bid over to the DC-8 or the 727 when that was an option. What is it about the 757/767 that keeps you on it despite the ****ty trips??
just curious

Slice 02-28-2007 05:06 PM

Vito, it sounded to me like he was trying to convince senior pilots not to fly in his domicile(aka sarcasm).

birdstrike 02-28-2007 05:27 PM

Vito & Slice,

I was on the 727 for 3 years. I bid reserve and got called in about 3 time a month. "Hello this is crew scheduling we've had a sick call and we need you to operate SDF/TYS layover and then operate back tomorrow." A long trip was Rockford, IL. These guys and gals had it made!! It is unlike any other type of flying at Brown. There are a lot of very senior pilots on that fleet and they will likely find themselves other good deals. Like bidding the 400 and taking the rest of the year off. I went to the 75/76 and got my balls busted enough to leave for the MD. Good luck everyone, in whatever you choose!!

OK smart guy, let me start by saying that when I bid the 75, it was all I could get. I did not even bid the 72 because I don't live in the Ville and did not want to sit around some crash pad waiting for a CID round trip once a month. I actually don't mind the 75 sched. that much. My point was how bid a shock it is going to be for SOME of the 72 guys.

And nothing that I have posted is my opinion. It is just the way it is at UPS. The 72 has or soon to be had the easiest scheds. in the fleet.

Vito 03-01-2007 03:07 AM

UPSFO4life,
Understand, I wasn't trying to be a smart guy..it always made me wonder why so many 757 guys complained about the scheds yet stayed on the jet. When I was first hired my goal was to fly a 757, it was new and looked cool! but after a few months the "bloom came off the rose" take care, see you round the sort,
Vito

UPSFO4LIFE 03-01-2007 04:57 AM

Sorry to sound so rude. Also I hate training sooo much that holding a line and getting beat up beats going back to training.

Vito 03-01-2007 05:38 PM

You and me both!!!! Unfortunately for me, I have condemned myself to another round of punishment by upgrading on the DC-8, I know I will have to change jets some day!!!

peterpilot379 03-01-2007 05:44 PM

Is training that bad?

767pilot 03-01-2007 07:03 PM

not really, but it is 6 weeks or so away from home on your own nickle. I have always found the training to be good and in a very positive environment. The 757 program does have a bad rep though as having 8 pounds of crap stuffed in a 4 pound boot. Supposedly that has subsided a bit with the new program.

My partner and I called it the "fluff" program. I went through the new one and it's very pilot friendly.

Sounds different from the fluff program I am aware of

I went through AQP and it is not as bad as it was last year. I just don't like training at all. I guess now I don't have to worry about 380 upgrade.

Vito 03-02-2007 08:43 AM

I upgraded to Capt on the DC-8 with zero time in it before, so I put alot of pressure on myself to know as much as possible. It was alot of work, then couple that to the fact that I did this in July and August. So instead of drinking beers at the beach watching bikini's walking by, I was in hillbilly heaven looking at fat chicks and their Jerry Springer guest boyfriends in their dumb UK hats!!!
sorry to be so crude, actually the training is OK, and Louisville isn't so bad, but it does suck in the summer!!

About 50 Captains, 43 FO's, and 61 Engineers. Over 75% of the Engineers are over 60. They will be going to the DC-8 and the 747 classic.
