Hey everyone, want to hear a joke......socialism.......hahaha!

About 3 years ago, Boeing took a gamble. Airbus had proposed their massive A3XX (A380), saying that traffic congestion at major hub airports, and the growing demand for air travel was a reason to produce a new super jumbo that is 150% bigger than the worlds largest aircraft at the time(the 747-400).

Boeing, instead of following suit, declared that the future of the market was midsized widebody jets that would aid in international expansion on routes that cannot support 600+ seat aircraft. Fuel efficiency would be the key selling point, and in order to achieve this, they were to do something that has never been done before on a commercial aircraft. Make it out of lighter weight composite material. The 7E7 was born.

At this time, Airbus was gaining market share. Their A320 was killing the 737NG, and their new A3XX was the next big thing.

The fact is that Boeing has the widebody market locked up.
- 747-8 for high density long haul route
- 787 for lower density long haul route (replace the 767)
- 777 fills the gap between these two aircraft.

As for Airbus,
-The A380, plagued with delays, has not sold as well as expected. This SNAFU caused Airbus to loose several orders and lay off over 10,000 workers. I don't even believe Airbus has sold enough A380's to recoupe their research and development costs. Boeing took an existing aircraft (much cheaper to develop) and expanded it (the 747-8) into a large size aircraft, not unnecessarily massive like the A380.
-The A350 was a mistake. Airbus wanted to follow suit on the 787, but they decided to be conservative and not make the entire aircraft out of composite. After losing to Boeing almost 10 to 1 on orders, Airbus decided to revamp their aircraft to become the A350XWB. While the 787 is scheduled to be delivered in 2008, the A350XWB is not scheduled to enter service until 2013.
-As bad as these previous two aircraft, the A340 is the worst of them all. The twin engine 777 flies circles around the A340. It's four engine design is costly both in terms of fuel burn and maintenance costs. The 777 is faster and longer range. Since the A340 is so much more expensive to operate than the 777, Airbus decided to offer to pay the difference is operating costs to customers. Still hardly any orders.

The only place where Airbus is competing with Boeing is their narrowbody A320. It will be interesting to see who comes up with the next generation of A320/737.
The next generation A320/737 will not just replace the 737 sized aircraft (best selling aircraft EVER), but it will also need to replace the 757 size line (like the 737-900ER and A321), and ideally fill the void in the 100 seat market (EMB-190, CRJ-1000).
This line will also replace the older MD-80, DC-9, 737, A320, 757.... Maybe that is where Airbus needs to turn their attention.
